As a solution to the issue of space for infrastructures in the Manhattan area, architecture firm Oiio Studio has designed a curved skyscraper set to built as part of the Billionaire’s Row on the southern border of Central Park.
Led by Greek architect Ioannis Oikonomou, the firm conceptualized the building to be approximately 4,000 feet long if it is to be measured from end to end. That’s more than 2,200 feet longer than One World Trade Center, the largest tower in the Western Hemisphere, and about 1,200 feet longer than the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

“If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York, we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan,” reads the building proposal on Oiio’s website.
Called the “Big Bend,” the U-shaped skyscraper takes inspiration from the concept of a company which created an elevator that not only moves vertically but also horizontally, according to Oikonomou.
There is not details yet as to how narrow the slender structure will be, but the skyscraper is said to have an elevator which can “travel in curves,” moving both vertically and horizontally in continuous loops along the length of the glass-lined tower.

For now, the Big Bend is but a conceptual design. But Oikonomou reveals that he has been seeking investment to build this skyscraper and sent plans to a few companies. And he believes that many developers will realize the importance of the idea.
“The Big Bend has been created, among other things, in order to emphasize the fact that New York has become a giant hotel,” Oikonomou says, referring the recent trend of people buying condos without using them as primary residences. The Big Bend would “ensure maximum profit for its investors, even if its apartments are inhabited only for some days every year.”
