Robocop Dubai To Join Police Force Next Year

Robocop Dubai will be introduced by police force to stop crime and promote tourism.

There’s a new wave of police officers that roam the streets of Dubai and it will be composed of robots.

At the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX), a prototype of this new kind of defenders of the land will join the ranks of the police force. Rightfully called a robocop, one robot patroller was showcased in a room at Dubai’s annual computer and electronic trade show, saluting and shaking the hands of attendees. For now, it has a face-scanning feature, on top of a touchscreen on its chest that can be used to report crime and pay fines for traffic violations.

A virtual assistant system is being worked on so it can follow voice commands. Collaboration between Dubai Police, IBM’s supercomputer, Watson, and Google has been made to improve Dubai’s robocop.

Dubai Police’s Technical Innovations Department Head Major Adnan Ali said in June that integrating AI technology to the robot enables it to “spot people from 10 meters or 20 meters away, approach them and greet them.” He added, “We’re expecting for it to be in tourist areas at first in 2017, near Burj Khalifa, GPR, City Walk and by 2020 we want to have a more thorough area covered.”

This isn’t the first time that such robot has been displayed, as last year’s GITEX had a similar prototype.
