This Furniture by IKEA Allows You To Have a Garden Indoors

Like any IKEA furniture, the pieces can be attached together with the help of an instruction manual.

IKEA is known for its practical, well-designed, and affordable furniture and home accessories. It has its own innovation lab called Space10, which has recently made a flat-pack spherical garden furniture which plans are now open-source.

The Growroom, as its name suggests, looks a lot like a garden extension for it grows plants, veggies and herbs. When bored, a few people can sit inside and admire the crops in this nine-foot tall living furniture.

“Standing tall as a spherical garden, it empowers people to grow their own food much more locally in a beautiful and sustainable way,” designers of Space10 wrote on Medium.

Like any IKEA furniture, the pieces can be attached together with the help of an instruction manual. The Growroom can be built in only 17 detailed steps so the owner would not have a hard time putting up this structure.

It is made of 17 sheets of plywood made into a living furniture using a rubber hammer, 500 stainless steel screws, and a milling machine.

“The Growroom seek to support our everyday sense of well being in the cities by creating a small oasis or ‘pause’-architecture in our high paced societal scenery, and enables people to connect with nature as we smell and taste the abundance of herbs and plants,” explains Space10.

In late 2016, the Growroom was launched with the first one built and exhibited at the Chart Art Fair in Copenhagen. Later, it was improved to have no more metal parts and all plywood instead.

But it is the first time that IKEA made the plans of the Growroom open-source, meaning that people can make use of the plans and the instruction manual to their disposal.

According to the designers, the main goal of the project is to promote local agriculture.

“Local food represents a serious alternative to the global food model. It reduces food miles, our pressure on the environment, and educates our children of where food actually comes from,” Space10 writes.
