Online Privacy

Almost everyone is on the internet nowadays that it’s becoming too hard to stay away from it yourself. Being online can be very convenient for some, but all that fun and games can disappear in a moment once your personal information gets stolen.

We’ve received a letter from one of our readers that talked about their experience with identity theft. Here’s what she had to say:

“I’ve experienced it once before. Seeing your face plastered on a profile that you know you didn’t make. Getting your reputation broken over a post that you didn’t even type. I’ve received harsh treatment because that account badmouthed once of my bosses. I didn’t know who it was but what they were doing tormented me.”

Being the target of hacking or impersonation is not a pleasant experience. Seeing this letter made us think that we should inform everyone on how you can secure your online life. Here’s a few tips that we have to ensure that you have a safe online experience.

1. Check your browser settings

Always check the browser settings of the computer that you’re using, especially at work. Don’t allow sites to save cookies on your device, even if you trust the site. There might be a time where you’ll click a bad link and be sorry that you had your cookies turned on.

2. Update your social media settings

Top social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have privacy settings that you should regularly check. Whether it’s on the phone or on your computer, these settings help you keep your profile safe from hacking. Try to limit the information that’s viewable by strangers on your account, this’ll make it harder for them to use your information against you.

3. Add some preventive measures on your PC

Intruders have a variety of ways to attack, including spyware, malware, and viruses. You should always keep your computer safe by having a software protection program installed. If you’re unsure of what program to buy, check out tech forums or try looking up suggestions from well accredited sources. Never pirate these software as they may be the cause of your downfall.

4. Always keep your software up-to-date

Harmful programs are getting stronger by the minute. That’s why you should follow up and update your software on a regular basis. You can never go wrong with getting a stronger weapon. If you’re on a Windows PC, there are some updates that you can install that will decrease the risk of your vulnerability.

Getting hacked is the worst thing that could happen nowadays as even the most sensitive of information can be found online. Just make sure that you’re aware of everything you do on the web to ensure that you have a safe and fun browsing experience.
