This Blind Engineer at Apple Can Efficiently Work Than You
We’re often amazed when we hear stories about young engineers who defy the odds and make a difference that affect several communities but Jordan Castor’s story will surely inspire you without a doubt. Having been born blind, the world didn’t expect that someone like her will be working for Apple and making an impact on the tech world at 22!
When it came to people with disabilities, people think that their actions are limited because of the many challenges “normal” people don’t get to experience everyday. What we don’t know is that people like Jordyn is as capable of amazing work despite the circumstances given to them.
Growing up, Jordyn has always defied expectations. Her parents often encouraged her to be adventurous and curious with the world around her. This often led her to be hands-on with everything she did as a child. Everybody who supported her have often encouraged her to use a gadget by figuring out how it’s used first before she starts using it.
She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree on Computer Science and became an intern for Apple after talking to representatives at a job fair. When she went to that job fair, she thought, “You aren’t going to know unless you try. You aren’t going to know unless you talk to them… so go.” When her internship was over, she was immediately hired to work for the company full-time.

She is currently working for Apple now. Using her knowledge in computers, she is tasked to enhance features like VoiceOver for blind Apple users. She shared, “I realized then I could code on the computer to have it fulfill the tasks I wanted it to. I came to realize that with my knowledge of computers and technology, I could help change the world for people with disabilities. I could help make technology more accessible for blind users.”
Castor was often described as “passionate” and “dedicated” by her team, where she works as an engineer that focuses on accessibility design and quality. She shared, “I’m directly impacting the lives of the blind community.”
Apple has always made an effort to make its products accessible to different kinds of users. Through the company’s efforts in innovation, it makes sure that the blind and low-vision community can also use their products. Jordyn Castor is proof that there should be no limitation to the expectations we give to people with disabilities. It doesn’t and will never make them less capable of achieving great things compared to the other people around them.
