The headline may have caught your attention. You thought, “Why would this writer tell me I will fail? Why would she say that?” Or maybe it caught your attention since you are already having a hard time in engineering school. Either way, I am telling you that you will fail.
But not that I want you to fail.
I’m telling you that you will fail because you eventually will. That’s just how it goes. Nobody can say how you will fail but at one point in your life, you will disappoint your families, your friends, your professors, your colleagues and yourself. There will come a time when you will fail miserably in your exams and projects and you end up frustrated with yourself. You will get to a point where you will hate the world for being so unkind to you after going through one failure to another. You will run out of luck one day.
I would know because I’ve been there. I often failed in my exams in engineering school, I had to shift out of a difficult engineering program because me and my professors didn’t see how fit I was to be in that program, it took me more than five years to graduate and lastly, I was the only one from our school who didn’t pass the licensure exam the first time. Just my luck, right? If you look at it in some way, my whole engineering school experience was a failure.

But if I look at it in a different way, I realized that those failures eventually led me to where I am now. The disappointments and the heartaches that came along the failures taught me so many lessons and it kept me going. It may sound cliche but it made me a stronger individual who is ready for more challenges ahead. I failed so many time the past few years that it made me prepared for what’s to come in a new chapter in my life as an engineer.
Don’t just take it from this writer. If you’ve read stories of famous people who made a huge impact in this world, they’ve often failed before they were able to succeed in their lives. The innovators of today are still failing at something, but that’s okay because they know every wrong move will point them to the right direction.
So, dear engineering students, I am telling you once again that you will fail. You’ll fail in exams, in subjects, in engineering school and even in relationships. Life will not make it easy for you if you want to be an engineer who wants to make a difference. So don’t get discouraged if you’re going to fail at one point in your life. Use it as motivation to keep going. Learn from the mistakes and move on and move forward. You will fail but you will learn. That would lead you to the success you’ll earn eventually. So don’t be afraid to take a chance and pursue your passions. Don’t be afraid to fail.
