Engineering students who take computer-aided design (CAD) subjects are taught of the functions and tools of the software. They learn, upon instruction, how to make figures, create elevations and floor plans, and place dimensions, among others hands on and on their ways, so most likely there will be techniques that they think is right and okay to be used.

1. Basic dimensions are useful when you are controlling the geometric tolerance of a part. They should be three decimal places, and boxed. Basic dimensions are used in conjunction with a geometric tolerance block.
2. Extension lines of dimensions should never touch the model sides, and should never be shortened. They should fall just short of the feature being placed dimensions with.
3. A dimension line should not be used as a dimension feature nor coincide with another dimension line.
4. Short dimensions should be placed closest to the model and long dimensions should be farthest away. Avoid crossing dimension as much as possible.
5. Dimensions should line up in chain fashion. Do not create double dimensions unless you plan to make them reference dimensions.
6. Do not make dimensions from and to hidden lines as they cannot be inspected.
7. Always identify electrical ports and their clocking angles. This will help with installation.
8. Dimensions should never be placed in the area of the model. They should always be outside of the model.
