This Mechanical Engineer Got into the Top 5 of Miss Universe 2017

Miss Universe Venezuela is not only an accomplished engineer by career, but also a hardworking humanitarian.


Nowadays, more and more women are pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics while keeping their interests and passions in other fields. Such is the case of two candidates in the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant, Miss Universe.

One of them is Keysi Sayago, who proudly represents Venezuela. She is a mechanical engineer by profession, which proves that she is indeed a combination of beauty and brains. In this year’s Miss Universe Pageant which was held at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada, Keysi was able to make it to the Top 5.

Keysi Sayago was born in Venezuela in the capital city of Caracas. Like many of her fellow competitors, she has been able to work hard and pull herself up to get where she is now. Keysi has always had an interest in mechanical equipment and how things work. At the age of 24 she has earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Experimental University of the Armed Forces in Los Teques, Miranda, Venezuela.

In the past few years, Venezuela has gone through a massive oil and financial crisis as the cost of oil rapidly decreases. For a nation whose main economical export lies heavily on the oil industry, this crisis has been devastating. This resulted a large portion of the population to suffer the consequences. Keysi dedicated to spending her time helping people in need by filling volunteer positions at soup kitchens, homeless shelters as well as providing and distributing supplies to vulnerable areas of Venezuela.

According to Keysi, “I have had an active role in the political manifestations in my country. I was not able to isolate myself from the reality and the difficult situation my country is going through and only continue with my training towards this beauty pageant and commitments with the Miss Venezuela Organization, I felt it is a responsibility as a beauty queen of Venezuela to fulfill my duty as citizen and support my people.”
