Print Out Your Own Clothing With This Digital Knitting Machine

Feeling chilly? Print out a sweater!

If you think knitting is reserved for the older generations, then you’re wrong. In fact, it could probably be the new trend for the millennial generation as well, thanks to a new Kickstarter project.

The product, called Kniterate, is a digital knitting machine that promises to “bring fashion fabrication back to your neighborhood.” And it indeed is, as us digital natives are excited to get our hands on a machine that’s like a 3D printer for clothes.

Kniterate is essentially a digital knitting machine that can turn your digital design into a knitted piece of clothing. The team says that the process of both designing and constructing the sweater is “very easy,” allowing you to make simple things such as scarves, beanies, or ties, and even more complex things like dresses, sweaters, and even shoes easily with it.

“We have developed Kniterate because we want everyone to be able to explore knitting’s potential,” writes the Kniterate team on their campaign page. “Until now the only similar tools available were industrial knitting machines, which cost upwards of $50,000, take a lot of space, and require a technician to run. With Kniterate you can make personalized professional knitwear at the click of a button, and repeat and share your favorite designs over and over again.”

Even if you have zero experience knitting, Kniterate makes it so much easier by letting the machine handle most of the heavy and difficult processes. All you have to do is create your design (either from scratch or from a template), let Kniterate knit either the entire thing for you, or produce pieces you can easily assemble. From there, you can wear your creations, give them out as gifts, sell them, or share them online on the Kniterate community.

As of right now, their Kickstarter campaign has 3 days left to go, and has raised over $600,000, that’s way over their $100,000 goal with over 445 backers.

Be warned though, as with most cool new machines that make stuff easy, Kniterate is very expensive, costing around $4,700 a pop. Shipping is expected to begin in April 2018. You can check out their campaign on Kickstarter
