If You’re Not Meant For Engineering College

To all my friends who left engineering college

Farewell engineering college.

I had to say goodbye to a couple of dear friends back in college. We started out as chemical engineering students, then one by one, we drifted apart as most of them left the program. It was hard they say. Their hearts are not in it. While they left to chase after their dreams, I stayed in engineering.

Time went by so easily and a month from now, I’ll be getting my diploma from my college. I worked hard for this. My heart is filled with joy as I anticipate graduation. I’ve received so many congratulatory messages from family members and friends. Of course, this was that time of my college life when old friends would reconnect with me to say their congratulations. There they were. In my inbox, all my friends who left the program sent me messages to tell me how happy they were for me.

As I look through their profiles, I realized that they’re very happy with the way their lives turned out. Some have pursued their love for film while the others went on to be the next businessmen in the country. I also have friends who shifted from my course to a course in creative writing. As I scroll through their walls, my heart is delighted to see them free to do something they’ve always wanted to do. Back when we were still struggling freshmen students in the chemical engineering program, I hear them complain about how they’re unhappy all the time. There’s definitely a huge difference now and I’m happy for them.

They know engineering wasn’t for them that’s why they left. It might have been hard for them at first to adjust in a new environment but they managed. Eventually, they were able to excel in something they love. So, let their story inspire every frustrated engineering student out there. I know it’s not for all of us. If your passion is not in it – if your heart was never in engineering in the first place, I encourage you to follow your heart. If you believe you’re not meant for engineering, leave and choose a program where you can be happy. It’s okay. Engineering school will miss you, but you have to go your own way.

Farewell engineering college.
