Android Creator Launches The New Essential Phone

Have a look into the prototype smartphone that’ll eventually run on a whole new OS

We all have android phones. It’s a staple part of every millennial and post-millennial’s life. However, we tend to forget that the Android OS wasn’t originally developed by Google. It was created and once owned by Andy Rubin and his colleagues back in 2003, and was bought by Google in 2005 for at least 50 million dollars. Now, Rubin is back with his new startup company, Essential Products Inc. And soon they plan to launch their newest gadget, the Essential Phone.

The units shown are still prototypes, and they run on the Android OS. The final product, however, will most likely run on the Ambient OS. For those of you who don’t know, it’s an open-source OS originally for desktop which will soon be ported to mobile devices. That said, let’s focus on the phone’s specifications.

Given the recent trend on slim and sleek Android and iOS phones, at the very first glance, it seems to go against the tide. It’s a bit wide and blocky, around 5/6th the width of an iPhone 5. It’s also a bit large, albeit not phablet-sized. It has a 5.7-inch screen, and the display takes up almost all the space on that screen. It’s a squarish phone with rounded edges, again resembling old iPhone designs, but with a screen much, much wider.

The back is glossy and ceramic, and while it feels fragile, it’s likely more damage resistant that most phones. It has a fingerprint sensor at the very back of the phone. The more we describe it, the more it resembles the Samsung Galaxy S8, with the huge display taking up all of the screen and the fingerprint sensor moved to the back. However, the sensor is put in a much more convenient and easy to reach place than the Galaxy S8, so that’s a huge plus. It’s also big enough to be an easy target to press.

This phone also has the minimum amount of ports in them. It only has a single USB-C port at the bottom, a speaker grille, and a nano-SIM tray. There’s also one bonus wireless port at the back, which works by attaching two pogo pins in it. All it does is transfer power though. Also, it uses “wireless USB” to transfer data from phone to PC. It’s similar to how a wireless charging dock would work.

Finally, the phone comes equipped with a back and front camera, both being 13 megapixels. Each camera has one regular color sensor and another monochrome sensor, improving the amount of light and data taken in to make the image look more vivid. There’s also a two-toned flash as an added bonus.

Overall, it’s a pretty neat phone, resembling a Galaxy S8, iPhone 5, and iPhone 7 hybrid. It’ll run on an all-new OS that we can’t wait to see how it performs. We’re not so sure when it’ll be released, but it’s probably soon.
