We Will Be Able to Drive a Flying Car by 2020

But damn, one flying car is expensive.

Flying cars are the future! That’s what many car manufacturers have promised, not citing when. But it appears that the future they are talking about is only 3 years away.

AeroMobil is considered the first company to roll out a successful commercial design for a flying car, already set to be delivered by 2020. The startup based in Slovakia has put a price on their flying car amounting between $1.3 million and $1.6 million.

A prototype has been released in the supercar show Top Marques Monaco in April of this year, which showed a lot of promise. In an interview with Business Insider, AeroMobil CEO Juraj Vaculik said that the ultimate goal is to launch a version of the vehicle as part of a shared mobility service in the future. However, he added that it’s too early to get into specifics about that plan.

But what we know about the AeroMobil is that it is a flying car in its purest form: it can drive both on the road and over the skies. When it is on land, it can run as fast as 160kph and drive for 700 km; and while on air, it can reach a top speed of 360 kph and fly for 750 km.

The company said those who will buy the flying car need to have a pilot license to operate the vehicle. Other than that, they should also have an access to a runway in cases they want to use the vehicle in the air.

According to AeroMobil CTO Douglas MacAndrew, the vehicle is only available for use in Europe for now, but the company plans to release it later in the United States, and eventually, in China.

“The aircraft regulation for both the US and Europe are very very similar indeed,” MacAndrew said. “Within months of being able to sell the vehicle in Europe we will also be able to sell it in the US market.”

AeroMobil announced that they are only producing 500 units of the flying car ready for delivery in 2020. Customers only need to pre-order to ride this great feat of engineering.
