Wouldn’t it be nice to fly on our way to work using hoverboards? Imagine how fast we could get to the office because there won’t be any traffic. We’d even look cool, too. It would be like living in a sci-fi movie, right? But alas, no existing technology has made this sci-fi dream come true yet. However, hope is not lost as this Canadian inventor has proven that the future of flying hoverboards is still possible.

Catalin Alexandru Duru is a Canadian inventor who just set a new world record for the farthest hoverboard flight at Lake Ouareau, Quebec. Using his propeller-based invention, he traveled a distance of 275.9 m (905.2 ft). It reached a height of 5 m (16.4 ft), but Duru said that it can still reach higher altitudes. This amazing hoverboard was created over the course of 12 months.

Hoverboards were first heard of in the movie, Back to the Future Part II, where Marty McFly used a futuristic skateboard – the hoverboard – to escape from a group of bullies. McFly had a little trouble escaping them when the hoverboard failed as soon as it flew over a small pond. Unlike the movie’s hoverboard, Duru’s invention can fly above water.

Duru’s invention allows it to fly using the propellers present. Duru controls it with his feet. Duru wanted to showcase a stable flight was possible by using a hoverboard and a human can stand on it and control the hoverboard using his feet.

In order for him to break the record, he had to fly for over 50 meters. Isn’t it amazing that he was able to travel five times more than what he needed to surpass? This just shows how the hoverboard has a bright future in the market one day. Clearly, we’ll be seeing a lot of McFly wannabes in the future.
