Connect Your Contact Lenses to a WiFi

Engineers have developed contact lenses that can connect wirelessly using radio signals from one device and send data to another.

Contact Lenses Will Soon Be Able to Communicate With Phones Using Wi-Fi

Contact lenses are now added to the list of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Engineers have developed contact lenses that can connect wirelessly using radio signals from one device and send data to another. This technology is called “interscatter communication”. The process works by converting Bluetooth signals emitted by watch into WiFi transmissions which can be picked up by a smartphone.

According to Vikram Iyer, an electrical engineer from the University of Washington who led the research, “Wireless connectivity for implanted devices can transform how we manage chronic diseases. For example, a contact lens could monitor a diabetic’s blood sugar level in tears and send notifications to the phone when the blood sugar level goes down.”

This research is the first at showing that power-limited devices can communicate with other computers using standard Wi-Fi communication. This technique uses backscatter, a communication technique that allows devices to exchange information by reflecting existing signals.
