The First Independently-Developed Supersonic Jet and Fastest Civil Plane Ever Made

Introducing the Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 “Baby Boom” jet

As of the moment, the fastest nonstop flight from Los Angeles to Sydney is about 15 hours. The independently made XB-1 jet by Boom Supersonic, however, can cut down that flight to only about 6 hours, and this jet will be ready to take flight soon. The jet, nicknamed “Baby Boom”, will be the world’s fastest and highest flying jet ever, and once it takes flight, then same-day return flights to around 500 routes worldwide could become the future of airline travel.

Boom received the funding for the XB-1 through Series A funding, from a group that includes the Spaceship Company Virgin Galactic. In total, Boom’s funds for the jet is at around 41 million US dollars, although that’s only just 12.5% of the 329 million dollars needed to build the jet itself. To make up for only some of this cost, Boom will charge its passengers around 6,600 dollars per seat, with a total of 45 seats.

While this is very, very expensive, the fact that you can fly from San Francisco to Tokyo in only 5 hours or from Ney York to London in only 3 and a fourth of an hour, those 45 seats will probably be sold out easily; and it doesn’t help that the jet has around 6 more years to fill up those seats before it will actually take flight.

According to Boom themselves, the XB-1 will be the first ever independently-developed supersonic jet, and it’ll be the fastest civil airplane ever made, at around 2335 kilometers per hour, which is around 10 percent faster than the Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde supersonic passenger turbojet. It’ll also fly the highest, at around 60,000 feet (or 18 kilometers) up in the air, providing a smoother and faster ride. All the seats are also single rowed on each side, making all of them aisle and window seats.

All of its features are nice and all, but even just the same day flights that cut travel time in half is enough to keep us excited for this jet’s launch.
