The house with the most sustainable HVAC system.

GilBartolome Architects from Granada, Spain have created The House on the Cliff. It’s literally a house buried into the side of the cliff. It has 16 inches of insulation in its concrete roof, which “allows for a magnificent mix of insulation and thermal inertia.” The house maintains and interior temperature of 19.5°C [67°F] throughout the year without any additional heating or cooling.

Its engineering structure is remarkable as well. The house is made with a handcrafted formwork system using deformable metal mesh. The construction of the House on the Cliff relies heavily on craftsmanship and local labor. Because of the financial recession in Spain, the team who created this decided to avoid machine made industrial construction systems and develop an architecture that is based on many hours of labor.
