Paul Moller is an engineer who has been developing the Moller Skycar personal vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle for the past forty years. Now, his most iconic creation, the Moller Skycar, is now put up for auction on eBay with a starting price of $1 Million and a selling price of $5 Million. There is one catch though–you can’t fly it. The auction announcement has made it clear as it states: “a condition of this sale is that it cannot be flown.”

Even if the skycar has been successfully test-flown a number of times, it has never passed approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration. The bright red vehicle “combines the high-speed capabilities of a fixed wing aircraft with the vertical take-off and landing capabilities of a helicopter. Its ducted fans provide lift and propulsion without the dangers of exposed rotor blades and high maintenance costs of rotary-winged aircraft.” The company said.

“The vehicle employs state-of-the-art fly-by-wire computer technology to monitor, control, and maintain stability of the aircraft, while simultaneously making it simple and easy to operate.”
It’s sad news, because although Moller himself has been working on flying personal transport for the last few decades, these kind of advances in technology have only begun.
There are many companies that are currently working on this technology as well. Dutch developer PAL-V International is working on a flying car, as well as AeroMobile, a Slovakian startup. Airbus and Uber are also rumored to be investing in this new tech.
According to the Moller International, its prototype could be the centerpiece of any car or aircraft collection in a public or private museum.

Reassembling the Skycar back to its original state will take some time, but the company says that the prototype can be bought by someone who wants to finish of the work and turn it from a museum piece into an actual flying car.
