According to Brainshark CMO Robert Saitz in an interview with Kimberly Whitler from Forbes, tech companies need to really understand the problems they are solving and often times, it requires that product managers are able to translate the needs of their buyers to the engineering or research and develop group. This is where engineering backgrounds become very helpful.

“All of the characteristics and skills of a great engineer, understanding process, operations, the ability to break big projects into small pieces, are all very helpful in a tech marketing career”, she added.

When asked how Saitz applied her mechanical engineering expertise in her current position, she attested that one needs to have an analytical approach, problem-solving skills and curiosity to be abe to reach a goal. Also from Saitz, “marketing roles involve being creative, innately curious and process-oriented –characteristics that are usually present in people with an engineering mindset”. So when spotting for that top managerial position in a technical company, one’s STEM background will definitely give extra boosts into becoming it.
