Why Engineers Should Focus On Progress, Not Perfection

We should strive for the best, but still allow imperfections--because that is what gives us room for improvement and creativity.

We all have goals we want to reach. Whether it’s to be a successful engineer, to be a rich tycoon, or maybe we’re not really sure what our goal is in life yet. But we all want to be a success, and to be able to achieve this, a lot of people strive for perfection.

Unfortunately, perfection is an illusion. Everything in this world is a combination of good and bad. Because of this, trying to achieve perfection in any point in our lives is pointless because you will ultimately fail, as you are setting an unreachable expectation since there is no such thing as perfection.

But we are human beings filled with imperfections and that’s what makes each of us unique. That in itself makes each of us awesome. So instead of striving for perfection, focus on progress and improvement to get closer to achieving your goals.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t set the bar high. We should absolutely dream big.

But we will focus on the progress, not perfection.

We should focus on the process,

on what is currently happening now and not the outcome,

on the journey and not the destination.

We will strive for continuous improvement and learn, grow and understand.

We will strive for the best, but will still allow imperfections–because that is what gives us room for improvement and creativity.

Because that is what will bring out our potentials as innovative engineers.

So, if some point in your career, you feel as though you’re not doing well or don’t want to start a certain project because you are scared to fail, or because you can’t do it perfectly, remember this: Perfection is an illusion.

Embrace your failures and learn from them. For it is in learning from your failures that you grow as a professional–as an individual. For if there was such thing as perfection, then there would be no more space for growth–and that would make life dull.
