Being in “Work Mode” All Day Long is Hurting Engineers. Here’s How to Detach

Going after that 'Employee of the Year' honor might not be worth it.

The work environment of engineers today is not the same as it is 10 years ago. Today, we are more connected than ever, which means that our bosses can reach us through text, call, or chat by all means possible and make us work longer hours, even during weekends.

While this is the trend now, only a few engineers realize the importance of having a work-life balance. That there should be time allotted for personal life because working full-time – literally – has serious implications when it comes to our health. The tendency of engineers having to be obsessed with work comes with a higher risk of depression, heart disease, and more.

So how should engineers go out of the hustle? Here are tips:

Disconnect

The most obvious tip here is to never let your boss reach you at times outside of work. You do not need or want him/her to distract you while you are taking your dog for a walk or while you are on a date. Smartphones are powerful tools of communication but you can also use that to distance yourself from work-related matters. There are apps that allows you to block communication apps, or you can easily turn off notifications from your boss once you outside the office.

Create mental boundaries

If you have done the first tip, then it’s time to let your mind do the task of detaching itself from your job as an engineer. You have to take a break by creating mental boundaries. More specifically, you do not have to mix work life with your home life. Leave everything that is work-related at the office and never bring them at home. That way, you have no association with stress with any part of your home.

Only talk about work at work

Especially if you choose to hang out with workplace friends after a long day, then you only have to bring up anything outside of work for conversations. This also helps in creating mental boundaries.

Stop overthinking things

Unless there is really some sense of urgency with your job as an engineer, then you really have no choice but to keep your lines open for your boss. The degree of importance is discretionary, and it is your own judgment if you feel like you have a job which requires you being accessible 24/7. Otherwise, you do need to be so stressed about having to reply immediately when your boss sends you an e-mail or a message. Be free about your thoughts when you are not at work. Go to sleep. Give yourself time to relax.
