If there’s one thing we’ve learned about our work, having a good boss matters. We’re not talking about someone everyone can bully and take for granted. We’re talking about the kind of good boss who would help us become better engineers at work. This is the kind of boss who knows how to handle a team especially when the work load is too heavy.

While some would say we all have our specific style of leadership, there are two traits that would make you a good boss. According to Robert Sutton, the author of Good Boss, Bad Boss and a Stanford professor, having “competence and compassion” for everyone in the team is one of them. Genuinely showing that you care about the people who work for you and letting them know that you have their backs will help each member of your team survive a demanding job.

The second trait Sutton suggests a good boss has is having the ability “to see both the forest and the trees at the same time.” Seeing the bigger picture of the work at hand while making sure that every tine detail of any work execution is done properly can help the team succeed with its goals.

Any boss knows that the position may lead to a complicated relationship between the boss and the members of the team. In one hand, you have to be seen as approachable and the biggest pillar of support for the team, on the other hand, you can also be seen as a demanding taskmaster. A good boss knows how to educate and discipline each member of the team while having the patience to correct the mistakes made by each one of them.

Sutton shares,  “You get more credit than you deserve and you get more blame than you deserve. Navigating that process is important for bosses to learn. Being a good boss is really really hard. It never ends.”
