There are many reasons why we pursued engineering in college. Some of us just love the thought of testing our limits when creating something while others thought they were good in chemistry, physics and math so a career in engineering is the best choice. There are students who chose engineering because it was what the others were taking. But for those people who were greatly influenced by their parents, they took up engineering because they need the money.
As we all know and seen from several reports, a career in engineering gives you a better chance of getting a high-paying job. With several industries looking for engineers to do the job, one doesn’t have to worry about employment after graduation.
But there will be one question that will leave you wondering: What if you’ll hate your job?
I’ve seen several complaints from my peers in the engineering field that they aren’t satisfied with their growth in their jobs. Either their work becomes an old boring routine or there’s less opportunity to get promoted because of the competition. For some, working 12 hours a day can be exhausting and takes up all your time and energy. Especially for millennials nowadays, we all want a balanced lifestyle where there’s time for work, social life, family, personal growth and love. There have been several complaints that their job as engineers is not something they want to do but something they have to do for the money.

It’s always a struggle to find a job where we get paid (very) good money while pursuing our passions. We’re even lucky if our jobs pay us well. So what do we have to do if we’re stuck with an engineering job that we’re not too happy about?
Here are three things that could help you.
- Be patient.
It takes time to finally find our purpose in life. Whether you become an engineer in your dream company or have a career shift, it takes time to sort things out in your career. Being patient allows you to learn important lessons about yourself and your career.
- Learn new skills.
Learning should never stop in college. If you want to be better at what you do, learn new skills that you can use for your career. Part of figuring out what job would really make you feel better (and having a promotion) involves learning new skills that will give you an edge over the others.
- Look for other opportunities.
You don’t need to quit for you to look for jobs. During your free time, take the opportunity to explore and find where you’d be a better fit. For most people, they would advise you to stay in your job while looking for a new one just so you won’t leave empty-handed.
