Here’s The Proof That You’re A Great Engineering Leader

How do you know whether you’re a great leader or not? Well, it’s pretty simple: Being able to “show and tell”

In a world centered around business, you’ll come across several different successful businessmen and entrepreneurs. Many people think that they are great leaders just because they bagged a win at the sales team or they scored a major investment. While it’s one of the reasons, it’s actually more than just that. Accompanying their success, is the combination of hard work, dedication, and strong leadership skills.

So, how can you tell if someone is actually a great leader? Well, it’s pretty simple: look at the people around you.

Take a look at their employees. See how they work, and how they treat their work. Why? Because great leaders know how to develop great employees. Great leaders are not only great and encouraging mentors, they also know how to pass on what they know and what they do to others.

Take, for example, the ability to take criticism to heart. A great leader is good at receiving feedback, seldom feeling hurt or betrayed. They don’t give you a condescending “you’re wrong” attitude, and stay open to change. If an employee says “you don’t communicate enough”, a great leader will not condemn the employee, and will show them gratitude. They will then hold a new daily meeting schedule or use online chat platforms like Messenger, Google, or Yahoo to communicate with others better.

Then, this attitude of being able to take feedback will shine from the leader like a glowing orb. Other employees will see this orb and say “wow, I should be more like him”, and will begin to take criticism to heart, just like the leader does. Then, other employees will see this too, and it’ll just spread from one person to another, like a wildfire of positivity.

That’s proof that someone’s a good leader. It’s just like the kindergarten game of show and tell. The leader will “show” their employees their skills. They will show how hard they work, finishing tasks a week before the deadline, keeping themselves productive, etc. Then, they will “tell” others to do the same, effectively inspiring every other employee, and those employees inspiring other employees, and so on and so forth until it spreads to the entire company.

At worse, a bad leader will keep all their skills and secrets to themselves. They’ll never share how they achieved success, and will never inspire others. Or maybe even something worse: a bad leader will “show” something negative, like regularly complaining about the work and tasks, or about how this employee did that thing wrong, etc, and will indirectly “tell” others to do the same. Where good leadership is like wildfire of light and positivity, bad leadership is a virus that contaminates everyone it touches.
