How Engineers Can Be More Productive In Life

This is what people like Apple CEO Tim Cook do everyday.

Be More Productive

Work can be too overwhelming for us. We’ve got deadlines to beat and an unbelievable amount of workload to rush so that we could avoid being embarrassed by our boss in a meeting. We don’t want to look and feel incompetent in what we do yet we often complain that there is not enough time to get things done. As young engineers who have so much to do in order to find our place in the engineering industry, we do our best to optimize our time working. Our success depends on the productivity we achieve in a day.

But did you know that you can be more productive if you follow this simple habit? It sounds easy but not everyone can achieve this. Come to think of it, the most productive people in the world do this – and we’re talking about Apple CEO Tim Cook. former president of Starbucks EMEA Michelle Gass and Virgin America CEO do this.

I’m talking about waking up at 4am! Now that’s something you’ll find hard to do but believe it or not, it’s achievable and has its perks. Though you have to sacrifice nights of drinking with your colleagues or staying up late to catch up on work. But if you decide to do this to achieve more productivity, you’ll realize that waking up at this ungodly hour allows you to have less distractions, no annoying phone calls or text messages from anyone or minimal chance of reading anything annoying on social media.

But what exactly can you do to feel encouraged to pursue this habit? Well, given the extra two-three hours to get things done before you head over to work, you can achieve these things:

  1. Check emails from the day or week before.
  2. Get fit with an early workout.
  3. Prepare and eat a healthy breakfast.
  4. Set goals for the day.
  5. Meditate.

While these may be simple things you think you can do later, you’ll be surprised how doing these things early will help you feel refreshed and energized to do something more productive of your time. By the end of the day, you may feel tired but fulfilled from the things you were able to achieve by waking up earlier than expected.
