On January 31, 2020, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex M. Azar II declared a public health emergency (PHE) for the United States to aid the nation’s healthcare community in responding to COVID-19. On March 11, 2020 WHO publiclyexternal icon characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic.

The WHO and the government officials has been imposing strict regulations about personal hygiene, proper coughing etiquette, social distance and eating healthy food to combat the spread of coronavirus. However, even public servants are not immune to the aggressive contagion that wrecks havoc to the global healthcare system and world economy. Some government officials in the Philippines have voluntarily placed themselves under quarantine and currently in isolation after exposing themselves from COVID-19 patients during the course of their work. On another note, there are now confirmed international politicians tested positive for the highly contagious novel coronavirus.

“There are far more politicians who have been infected than you would have by statistical chance,” Francois Balloux, a professor of computational systems biology at University College London. “Politicians are over-represented in the number of people who have been diagnosed.”

UK’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson

Johnson, 55, experienced mild symptoms on Thursday – a day after he answered at the prime minister’s weekly question-and-answer session in parliament’s House of Commons chamber.

On his Twitter account, Johnson said he had developed mild symptoms and was self-isolating.
“Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus. I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus. Together we will beat this,” Johnson wrote.

Prince Charles, UK’s Heir to the Throne

“The Prince of Wales has tested positive for Covid-19,” it said in a statement, using his official title.

“He has been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in good health and has been working from home throughout the last few days as usual.

Prince Albert of Monaco

Prince Albert of Monaco is the first head of state to be infected by the highly contagious novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Authorities in the tiny state said the 62-year-old ruler had been tested for the pathogen at the start of this week.

In a statement, the palace of Monaco says Albert is being treated by doctors from the Princess Grace Hospital. Prince Albert plans to continue working from his home office in the palace.

Mayor Francis Suarez, USA

The mayor of Miami, Florida, USA announced that he tested positive for coronavirus. “I feel completely healthy and strong,” he said, vowing to remain in isolation while continuing to govern the city remotely.

Philippine Senator Koko Pimentel, Tested Positive

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III has tested positive for the (COVID-19) coronavirus disease.

“I was informed late last night March 24, 2020 that I have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The swab was taken last Friday, March 20, 2020,” he said.

“Since the last day of session March 11, 2020 I had already tried my best to limit my movement. I will call (to the best of my ability) those I remember meeting during those crucial days so that I can inform them of my test result,” he added.

Philippine Senator Migz Zubiri, Tested Positive

As of 16-March-2020, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri tested positive for the deadly novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“It is with sadness that I announce that I am positive for COVID-19″ Zubiri said in a statement. “This afternoon, I received a call from Secretary [Francisco Duque III] on my condition. My heart sank with what he had said but Im uplifted with the fact that I am asymptomatic and have no fever or cough, nor am I weak or have any headaches,” Zubiri said.

“I was very careful in my dealings with people at work in the Senate. I practiced social distancing as well as a no-handshake policy yet I got contaminated. How? I do not know,” the majority leader said in a statement.

Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri is a veteran legislator, having served in both houses of Congress and posting perfect attendance in a combined 15-year service—a real Trabahador ng Senado.

UK Health Minister Nadine Dorries

UK Health Minister Nadine Dorries confirmed she has tested positive for COVID-19.

According to her tweet “Thanks for so many good wishes. It’s been pretty rubbish but I hope I’m over the worst of it now. More worried about my 84yo mum who is staying with me and began with the cough today. She is being tested tomorrow. Keep safe and keep washing those hands, everyone.”

This is a big stab right at the heart of Great Britain’s effort to combat the deadly coronavirus.

Sen. Sonny Angara, Philippines Senator

“I regret to announce that today, March 26, I received my test result and it is positive for COVID-19. I have been feeling some symptoms like mild fever, cough, headaches and general weakness. I have not been in contact with the public since taking the test last March 16. I ask for your prayers that together we are able to pull through this tremendous challenge.”

Brazil Press Secretary Fabio Wajngarten

Fabio Wajngarten, the press secretary for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, two sources have told CNN. Bolsonaro’s health is being monitored, CNN reported

It comes just days after Wajngarten met US President Donald Trump in Florida.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie Gregoire

Sophie Grégoire, also known as Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, is the wife of the 23rd and current prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. She is a former television host and is involved in charity work and public speaking, focusing mainly on women’s and children’s issues.

The Canadian Prime Minister tweeted “I have some additional news to share this evening. Unfortunately, the results of Sophie’s COVID-19 test are positive. Therefore, she will be in quarantine for the time being. Her symptoms remain mild and she is taking care of herself and following the advice of our doctor.” In a statement Thursday night, Trudeau’s office said: “Following medical recommendations, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau was tested for COVID-19 today. The test came back positive.”

On March 29, she has fully recovered and tested negative.

Begona Gomez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister

Begona Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, was tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday, Sputnik reported citing Spanish news agency Europa Press.

The condition of both the Prime Minister and his wife are assessed as “good”. Both are now in their residence, following the health authorities’ advice.

Two ministers of Sánchez’s Cabinet, the minister of equality and the minister of regional affairs, had already tested positive earlier in the week. The government said both are in good health as well.

“The tests carried out in the last hours in Moncloa [the prime minister’s residence] on the people closest to the prime minister have tested positive in the case of his wife, Doña Begoña Gómez,” the statement read. “Both Mrs. Gómez and the president are well, both remain in La Moncloa and follow the preventive measures established by the health authorities at all times.”

Budi Karya Sumadi, Indonesia Minister of Transportation

Indonesia’s Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has been hospitalized and isolated in Jakarta after he contracted the new coronavirus.

Sumadi’s family had given approval for the announcement after the minister had been on “the front line and a very important part of containing the impact of COVID-19”, said Pratikno, who is state secretary in charge of administrative support for the office of president.

State Secretary Pratikno announced on Saturday evening that Budi was identified as Case 76 in a previous Health Ministry announcement and was being treated at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital.

Sen. Susan McDonald, Queensland Australia

Queensland LNP senator Susan McDonald has tested positive to coronavirus.

“On Friday evening I began feeling unwell with a sore throat and a mild temperature,” Senator McDonald’s statement said.

“Unfortunately the test has today come back positive and I have now been admitted to hospital, where I will remain under the direction of Queensland Health.”

McDonald has followed fellow Queenslander and Home Affairs Minister Dutton in contracting the disease.

Sen. Andrew Bragg, Australia

Senator Andrew Bragg has tested positive to coronavirus after he attended a wedding at a Stanwell Tops venue earlier this month.

The federal Liberal senator representing NSW said he got tested “after satisfying the guidelines of direct exposure and flu symptoms”.

“I was a guest at a friend’s wedding in Stanwell Tops on 6 March,” he said via Twitter.

“I am following the guidelines set by NSW Health and will isolate myself.

“The immediate thing for me has been to properly brief my staff and ensure they have all the information they need,” Senator Bragg told Sky News.

“And then just try and trace through the various people I unfortunately had dealings with over the past week.

“I chaired a parliamentary inquiry last Monday into a superannuation bill so I did come into contact with a few members of parliament

Santiago Abascal, head of Spain’s VOX party

Santiago Abascal, who heads the Vox party, tweeted on Friday that he had the virus, saying although he felt reasonably well he would continue to work from home.

His official Twitter “Este martes, al conocer el positivo de Javier Ortega, me puse en cuarentena y pedí a un laboratorio privado un test de Covid-19. La prueba también ha dado positivo así que seguiré trabajando desde casa. Gracias por vuestra preocupación aunque me encuentro razonablemente bien.” (English translation: This Tuesday, upon hearing the positive of Javier Ortega, I quarantined and asked a private laboratory for a Covid-19 test. The test has also tested positive so I will continue working from home. Thank you for your concern, although I am reasonably well.)

Irene Montero, Spain Equality Minister

Irene María Montero Gil, MP is a Spanish politician and psychologist, member of the Podemos party. She currently serves as the Minister of Equality of Spain since 13 January 2020.

Montero tested positive on Wednesday evening, three days after appearing at a mass march of some 120,000 people through Madrid for International Women’s Day.

Montero is the fourth member of the Spanish Congress to be confirmed as having the virus, after Vox members Javier Ortega Smith and Carlos Zambrano García, and former PP speaker of the house Ana Pastor. Now an MP who is also a member of the Spanish government has been struck, as equality minister Montero has tested positive. As a precautionary measure, her partner Pablo Iglesias, leader of Podemos and one of Spain’s four deputy prime ministers, is also in quarantine.

Franck Riester, France Culture Minister

Franck Riester is a French politician. He is the current French Minister of Culture. He was a member of the National Assembly of France from 2007 to 2018. He represented the Seine-et-Marne department, and is a former member of The Republicans, formerly known as the Union for a Popular Movement.

French Culture Minister Franck Riester has been infected by the coronavirus outbreak, a source close to the culture ministry said on Monday, adding the 46-year-old member of government was “feeling well”.

“He is not in hospital, but rather confined to his home, with very few symptoms,” France’s health minister Olivier Véran said in an interview with French news channel BFMTV.

Massoumeh Ebtekar, Iran Vice President

Iranian Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Masoumeh Ebtekar has tested positive for coronavirus, the state-run daily IRAN reported.

Ebtekar is the first member of President Hassan Rouahni’s cabinet to be infected with the novel coronavirus.

The vice-president for women and family affairs is better known internationally as the English-language spokeswoman for the hostage-takers who seized the US embassy in Tehran in 1979, sparking a 444-day diplomatic crisis.

Iraj Harirchi, Iran Deputy Health Minister

Iran’s deputy health minister and an MP have both tested positive for the new coronavirus, as it struggles to contain an coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.

Peter Dutton, Australia Home Affairs Minister

Peter Craig Dutton is an Australian Liberal Party politician serving as Minister for Home Affairs since 2017, and has served as Member of Parliament for Dickson since 2001.

Mr Dutton, who sits on the national security committee, said he woke up with a “temperature and sore throat”.

He said he immediately contacted his local health department in Queensland and is now in hospital.

Politicians tested positive from the deadly coronavirus should remain in quarantine for the entire duration of their treatment. Although there are still no vaccine or cure for the COVID-19, the best way for these politicians tested positive is to rest, follow the doctor’s strict health regiment and proper diet.

“I immediately contacted the Queensland Department of Health and was subsequently tested for COVID-19,” Mr Dutton said in a statement. “I was advised by Queensland Health this afternoon that the test had returned positive. It is the policy of Queensland Health that anyone who tests positive is to be admitted into hospital and I have complied with their advice. I feel fine and will provide an update in due course.”
