In our technological society, you’ll notice that there are new products, new platforms and ideas that are popping out everywhere. Usually, these new products are ideas from inventors who want to make our everyday lives easier. As engineers, we are expected by many, if not everyone, to be able to do the same.

Unfortunately, not all engineers believe that they have the natural talent of being an inventor. After all, we all have different skills and talents. For example, there are engineers who are more talented in the field of testing and analyzing data, while there are others who love to experiment new ideas through trial and error method; there are those that love to build things from scratch, while there are those that love to modify existing technology to improve it. But what many don’t understand that all these skills are proof that they can indeed be successful inventors in their own ways.
Here are some signs to see if you got what it takes to invent.
You’re the inquisitive type
Inquisitive engineers are determined to investigate and figure out how things work, as well as which ones don’t. You are naturally curious about almost everything that moves. You are interested in a variety of subjects, and ask a lot of questions.
You tend to challenge the status quo
You are a problem solver. After all those gruelling years in engineering school, it’s safe to say that everyone who finishes engineering school are masters in the problem solving process. You always look for ways to improve things and try to make them better.
You’re not afraid of failure
You understand that failure is a part of your journey to success. For you, failures are part of the process that will let you learn and help you improve. Thomas Edison famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
You are tenacious
Successful inventions aren’t made overnight. Usually, successful inventions are products of many failure inventions that came before them. Inventing is always a long term commitment, and inventors understand that. Remember the first iPod? Before it became an international success, it had many failure predecessors.
You’re passionate
They say that it is passion that drives ideas into reality. If you really love inventing, and the whole process–including all the negative sides–then there’s no stopping you towards success!
You’re optimistic
This is an important trait especially for inventors. Positive outlooks towards your craft will bring out positive events, and will help you be able to look at the big picture instead of the negatives.
You have initiative
This is the fine line between dreamers and inventors. Dreamers have dreams and leave them as dreams, while inventors take action. Inventors have the initiative of making their dreams a reality, and I’m sure you’ll agree that engineers do these best!
You’re creative
Creativity is what makes your invention ‘original’. You think outside of the box, and that results in a new idea that can lead to a new invention.
These are only some signs, but hopefully you’ve noticed that no matter what your niche is in the engineering field, you are capable of being an inventor. So go ahead and try out that new idea of yours!
