Things That Hold Engineers Back From Being Promoted

Working hard and still not getting that promotion you think you deserve? These everyday things might be the reason for holding you back.

We’ve all wanted to advance in our careers. Be it to get as rich as possible, or just because it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, we all want that sweet taste of promotion (and the wonderful feeling of a higher salary). However, in this ever so competitive society we live in, it feels like it has become harder to get that promotion you deserve, and even more so in the cut-throat environment of engineering and technology.

With all of that in mind, what can you do to actually achieve it? Do you have to work harder? Work overtime? Or maybe it’s less of “you not working hard enough” and more of “that there’s something holding you back”, and that might just be the case. Here are 3 things that might be holding us engineers back from stepping up the career ladder:

1)      You have an unhelpful mentor

Everyone needs a mentor, especially when you’re starting a new job. We always need someone to teach us the way things work. However, as people grow and relationships change, your mentor might be the one holding you back. Sure, he/she might’ve been really helpful when you were just trying to get the hang of things, but as time progresses, he/she might actually grow to be rather unhelpful to you. Be it because they’re still stuck in an old mindset, or you’ve grown to be better than the mentor, whatever the reason, it might be time to let go of that teacher-student relationship.

2)      You have an irrelevant goal

Goals are an important part of life. They give us a sense of purpose and fulfillment, after all. But sometimes, these goals might actually be negatively affecting your career.

Say you have a bright idea for a new product, and make it your goal to have it pitched to your company. Then suddenly, you’ve been assigned to a different (and harder) project. If you can’t work on both at the same time, maybe you have to let go of that goal for now. Remember, in today’s world, it’s important to be flexible with others.

3)      You have an outdated approach

Say you’re working with your team, and out of nowhere, your company decides to upgrade to a new software. That’s good news for some, but for others, this is something that scares them. Think of that person who blurts out “But we’ve always done it that way!” and refusing to change their routine. It’s this mindset that holds a lot of people back especially in today’s technology-based world. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Switch that routine up for something newer and more efficient. Again, it’s important to be flexible, especially when it comes to changing our way of doing things.

While this list is far too short of everything that can hold us back, it’s certainly the most common ones. I hope this will be of help to you, and that you can one day get that promotion you’ve wanted.
