This Cafe in the Philippines is Exactly What Engineering Students Need

Seriously, why didn’t we have this when I was still an engineering student a few years ago?

I remember being an engineering student who always went to coffee shops like Starbucks to study my lessons. I had to order shots of espresso just to stay awake to review for different exams. This became a “study habit” that went on for years until I graduated from the University of the Philippines (UP). Unfortunately, most of those days when I had to stay in coffee shops to solve practice problems and read my lessons, I always felt awkward to stay there for more than three hours. I also had the problem of easily losing my focus because let’s admit it, the ambiance of most coffee shops is just cozy. You just want to take a nap. I certainly did back then.

So, when I found out about this cafe, I really wished that it was already there when I was still an engineering student. I’m sure me and my friends would head over to this place whenever we had an exam we needed to cram or we had to work on our thesis.

It’s the Diligence Cafe.

For Filipino readers who live in Metro Manila, you may have heard about this place that offers some things other cafes don’t: unlimited juice or coffee, a wifi connection, power supply and a shower! Aren’t those the essential needs of a struggling engineering student? And I find myself amused that you can find all of those in Diligence Cafe. They even offer meals to students who plan to stay there for the night.

For an entrance fee of $1.5 an hour (or Php 60), you can have access to the ones mentioned above. You can even stay here for the whole day for only $7 (or Php 350). So you can take a nap whenever you need to rest or have coffee anytime you want. This makes it more convenient for students who have no time to go home to take a shower – you only need to pay $2 (Php 100) for the shower inclusive of a shower kit. You can certainly do it in this cafe!

What makes this cafe more awesome is that you can ask the staff to wake you up at the time you tell them to do so. The cafe has a Nap Slip! Seriously, why didn’t we have this when I was still an engineering student?

One of the owners of this cafe is a Materials Engineering graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Together with his business partner, Anna Lorraine Uy, they’ve come up with this business concept that truly captures what every college student needs.
