Filipino ‘Habal Habal’ Driver Who Was Forced To Stop College Will Now Graduate Magna Cum Laude

Joyce Dublin, a 30 year old habal-habal driver who had to stop his education is graduating Magna Cum Laude in Math Education this month.

It seems like the influx of inspirational stories of people persevering through life’s struggles and ultimately achieving their dreams is never ending, and today, we’ve got another good one for you.

Joyce Dublin, a 30 year old man from Cebu, Philippines had reached a big challenge in his life when he was forced to stop his education due to financial reasons. His hopes for a brighter future had all seemed to go away once he decided to work for a living.

Bright and Intelligent, Dublin was once the school valedictorian who had plans on what to pursue in the future in college. However, he had to set this dream aside due to financial constraints and had to help his family survive. His mother was selling bread just to make both ends meet, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to pay for the college tuition.

Instead, Dublin had to earn money as a stockroom checker in a supermarket. He had struggled living away from his family who lived in Cebu for five years, before he decided to return home and live as a “habal-habal” driver to make a living. “Habal-habal” is a kind of motorcycle-taxi that fits 2 passengers more than the usual motorcycle to bring citizens to hard-to-reach areas where public transportation such as jeepneys and taxis aren’t an option.

It was there where fate had made him meet a passenger who admired his academic performance and offered to pay for his education. Without any hesitation, Dublin accepted the offer and enrolled at Cebu Technological University-Daanbantayan Campus, with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, Major in Mathematics. After a while, he then got a scholarship from the university.

“Discipline is the key,” Dublin says.

His dedication and love for teaching had paid off, and he is graduating this month as Magna Cum Laude. A review center also offered him a 100% discount to fulfill his next goal of being a nationally accredited teacher.

His professors at CTU-Daanbantayan had noticed that Dublin showed pure and true passion for teacher and education, going as far as teaching his students outside the four walls of the classroom to ensure they get the best out of their learning experience.

Dublin’s story just goes to show that even if you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom, the only way back is to go up. All you need is hard work and dedication to persevere through these struggles and prove your worth. As Dublin said in his own words, “life’s struggle is like a math problem: it takes hard work and a whole lot of faith to arrive at the right formula for success.”
