State-of-the-Art Engineering & Technology: Canadian University Dubai

State-of-the-art Engineering & Technology: The Canadian Connection. Written by Dr. Hichem Ben El Mechaiekh, Professor at Canadian University Dubai

The Canadian University Dubai (CUD) is a destination of choice for those parents and students who value a Canadian student centered education grounded in the values of people, respect, integrity, diversity and excellence. CUD was created as a portal to Canadian education, so with that in mind, it was built on the model of the typical Canadian post-secondary educational  institution, where students are encouraged to be themselves, confident, distinctive, and creative analytical thinkers.  CUD offers exchange programs and pathways to a number of well-established programs in leading public universities across Canada.

The Faculty of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology offers well established bachelors programs in Engineering (currently in  Telecommunications, Networks, and Computer and Network Technology) and plans on introducing a BSc in Electric Engineering with concentrations in Electronics, Mechatronics and Telecommunications (first intake will be in September 2017). In addition, it is currently developing exchange BSc programs with the prestigious Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario) in computing with specializations in General Computing, Biomedical Computing, and Software Design (first formal intake is planned for September 2018). The Faculty also offers two of the best Bachelor of Science programs in Architecture and Interior Design in the GCC, as benchmarked against Canadian and American standards.

As a parent, you’d choose Engineering, Architecture or Interior Design at Canadian University Dubai for its learning environment where the quality of the interaction student/professor is a top priority, coupled with excellence in instruction, mastery of state-of-the art technologies, and the opportunity for work placement (internships) and undergraduate research.

Our students are very early on trained on the use of industry standard software (e.g., MatLab for scientific computations, Simulink for modeling and simulation of complex systems, Multisim for circuit design and simulation, etc.). We want our students to “hit the ground running” when they join the workplace. That is why we provide them with intensive hands-on training in our engineering labs which include a state-of-the-art Advanced CISCO Lab (Canadian University Dubai being a preferred CISCO partner), an OS Software-Linux Lab, a Digital Communications Lab with the latest versions of the National Instruments NI ELVIS Boards, in addition to state-of-the-art Telecommunications trainers (DATEX, FOTEX) used in conjunction with Mutlisim and Labview.

Our best students have the unique opportunity to engage in research with our top researchers as undergraduate students. This is not possible in other institutions where only graduate students are entitled research training.  This clearly gives our students a head-start in building their research portfolio and positions them strongly for future graduate studies.

Last but not least, we offer a learning environment with a vibrant extra-curricular life where students can express their scientific creativity and unleash their imagination. A team from our Canadian University Dubai Student Robotics Club triumphed at the UAE finals of the Robotics Challenge in November 2015, only to confirm their supremacy with a second win in March 2017 (click here and click here). They went on to compete at the GCC Robotics Challenge on April 29, 2017 in Qatar where they placed 4th and won the title for “Most Creative Team” (Click here).

Our students are also engaged in the development of state-of-the-art technology and innovation with a three student team from Canadian University Dubai winning the opportunity to travel to Huawei Headquarters in China for their invention of a parking management application presented at Seeds for the Future, a national educational competition for talented and innovative students organized by Huawei Technologies in partnership with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority – Dubai, UAE Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs and Dubai Consultancy. Our students prevailed amongst a total of 18 qualified teams from UAE universities (Click here for more details).

In addition, with the help of professors, our engineering students launched on February 13, 2017 the official CUD Branch of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The purpose of the IEEE Student Branch is to provide students with the opportunity to be actively involved in technological activities and events and be a part of a world class professional society (Click here).
