Engineering is revered: It has a reputation of being such a pain to study (in a positive light). It requires many a skills from students, including (but definitely not limited to) numeracy, critical thinking, logic, drawing and quick decision-making. Being an Engineering student is like having a badge of honor and courage for having chosen to study one of the most difficult matters known to any student. Being identified with Engineering almost instantly commands respect from peers. Remember, you’re in the league of Iron Man.

2. Studying Engineering transforms you

The popular adage that says “true gold is forged in flames” hits home in the context of studying Engineering. Engineering changes its students, with all the challenges and sacrifices that comes with it. Within a short time, an Engineering student will acquire logical thinking and critical analysis skills needed to face all sorts of problems. He or she will learn to be more objective and less emotional when it comes to professional issues. In the absorption of these skills, Engineering students are known to do well no matter which industry they join; and they also tend to be skilled managers. You need a proof of how well engineers do in their fields? Well, a substantial number of the world’s billionaires has an Engineering degree.

Let’s be honest: One of the reasons why we choose a course in college is to be able to work in a good company, and earn a decent salary. Well, listen up: Decent salary is the ‘understatement of the year’ when we talk about how much engineers are making. Engineers are among the top-paid professionals worldwide, with average annual salaries starting from US$ 60K. According to studies, the most lucrative Engineering disciplines include chemical, computer, electrical, nuclear and petroleum.

4. Studying engineering allows you to “contribute” to the world

Being an engineer affords one the unique right to actually claim things he or she has done without being frowned upon by his or her peers. An engineer who had a hand in erecting a building can rightfully say “I built that building”, or a computer engineer that developed an app can justly say “I made that possible”.

There are other kickass reasons to study Engineering, and we can go all night and wait for the next day’s paper. But, though limited, I hope that this piece has served its purpose to anyone hesitating to take up Engineering, or to an Engineer looking for pat on the back for his or her choice.
