Why Engineer Leaders Need To Stop Overthinking

Being Engineers, we are known for thinking deeply--sometimes a little bit too deep.

Control is a concept that so many have attempted to master, but none have succeeded. It is what creates our daily routines, and honestly it feels good to be in control of your life. Exercising the art of control is good, but only up to a certain extent. However, if you concentrate too much on gaining control over everything–even the uncontrollable– you will end up being caught in a web of stress that is difficult to get out of.

It’s easy to tell yourself to stop overthinking. Unfortunately, it’s easier said than done. The best way to stop overthinking, is to let go.

Here are the reasons why you need to learn the art of letting go, and stop overthinking.

Thinking gets tiring.

We’ve all been there. Thinking all day if the decision you made on that project was the right one, or if your boss might have misunderstood that email you sent her. Quantifying your actions at every step can take a toll on you. Overthinking takes so much of your time and is counter-productive since most of the time, there’s nothing more you can do about it. All you can do is believe in your decision, and hope for the best.

Over thinking eats you up inside

Usually, overthinkers are those that seek validation from almost everybody. They think too much about what people think of them before or after a presentation, or if they might rub a colleague the wrong way during a conversation at lunch. Sometimes, they would imagine scenarios of what they would/ should do at that point in time. At the end of the day, worrying about things that haven’t happened yet can eat you up inside. Stop making hallucinated scenarios in your head and start living in the moment.

It stops you from being yourself

Let your inner self shine. Don’t let your worries get in the way of being yourself. You only live once and get one life. So instead of worrying about what you might have done wrong, or what you should do in a certain scenario, put your feet on the ground and live life in the present.
