Engineers, You Won’t Always Get What You Deserve

It’s an empowering feeling to know that you achieved something because everything was in your control, but sadly enough, that’s not always the case.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But life doesn’t always give you lemons, you just have to deal with it in your own way. Many aspiring engineers, even the veterans, have felt what it’s like to deserve something. You have your head held high, chest out, ready to take on the opportunities that come your way. It’s an empowering feeling to know that you achieved something because everything was in your control, but sadly enough, that’s not always the case.

Think of that job or promotion that you’ve always wanted. You know you have what it takes, you’ve done your homework. You show up for the interview all prepared, excellent clothes, excellent resume, and an excellent interview. You head home, thinking “I have this in the bag”; thinking that you have absolutely no chance of failing the interview. But the next morning, you get a call saying you didn’t get it, and that someone else is a better fit for the job. Sometimes, even if you put all the effort in preparing for something you know you deserve, life just decides to say ‘no’ and lead you elsewhere. Who knows, you may have the years of experience for a promotion, but a younger employee has produced better deliverables. Bottom line is that there’s always a valid reason why they chose not to get you.

This happens more often that you think, and it’s devastating to have to face situations like this. But whatever you do, don’t let this sinking feeling get you down for too long. After all, you still have the qualifications you’ve worked so hard for. Take this as a message that there’s something else out there for you, and that the job or promotion you applied for might not really be what your life needs right now. You might be led towards better opportunities, or places where your skills would be appreciated more. There’s nothing easy in life, especially in the engineering industry. If ever you take a fall, don’t be too hard on yourself. For what it’s worth, these situations can motivate you to get to higher places.
