How To Teach Your Kids Coding Online

Let these kid-friendly programs do the teaching.

Kids Coding

It’s a tech-driven world out there. Where there are technological advances, there are people who are coding programs to make these happen. Coding has become so relevant that some of the biggest names in today’s world are encouraging young people to learn how to do it.

Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman and one of the most powerful and richest people in the world, shares how coding program is important today:

“Learning to write programs stretches your mind and helps you think better, creates a way of thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains.“

Even Cheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, pointed out why coding is needed in today’s society:

“An understanding of computer science is becoming increasingly essential in today’s world. Our national competitiveness depends upon our ability to educate our children—and that includes our girls—in this critical field.”

Learning how to create programs will give them an advantage over those kids who only know how to play with their tablets. There’s a chance that they might be labeled as nerds, but nerds are cool!

So now that we’ve emphasized the importance of coding in today’s lives (by quoting prominent figures, of course), let these options guide you on choosing which platform is perfect to teach your kids how to code:

This is a free program for kids ages 8+. It’s a cool educational (and visually appealing) board game that teaches kids the basics of computer science.

Alice

www.alice.org

Alice is an “innovative 3D programming environment” that teaches young students the fundamental programming concepts by letting them create animated videos and video games.

Cargo-Bot

www.twolivesleft.com/CargoBot

It’s a free iPad app that teaches young kids how to debug in order to shift boxes around a box. This was the first game ever programmed on an iPad.

SpaceChem

www.spacechemthegame.com

This game is a mix of chemistry and programming that gives high school students a chance to use programming to build machines and fight monsters.

There are other fun ways to learn programming but for parents who want their kids to get hooked on it, check out the programs featured above. Your kids can easily learn programming and even apply it in real life. Learning how to code has a way of teaching kids how to analyze situations and have critical thinking. Wouldn’t that help secure your child’s future?
