This Boy Enters University At The Age of 13 Like It’s No Big Deal

If you’re attending Western Kentucky University for the class of 2021, you may bump into a 13-year-old boy in class.


If you’re attending Western Kentucky University for the class of 2021, you may bump into a 13-year-old boy in class. Nope, you aren’t in the wrong classmate. And no, this boy isn’t your professor’s son who is casually sitting in your class. This boy is William Poteet, who will have a diploma and two additional associate’s degrees in May next year. According to the university’s Office of Admissions, this 13-year-old boy will be studying math, economics and finance at the university starting next fall. He also considers studying physics.

On the university’s social media account, it says:

“Congratulations to this unique member of #WKU2021! William Poteet has been admitted to #WKU at the age of 13! He’ll graduate with his high school diploma and two associate’s degrees in May. Right now, he plans on studying math, economics, finance, and maybe physics for “fun!” We look forward to seeing everything you accomplish as a Hilltopper! #BigRedWay

Poteet was discovered to be gifted when he was six years old. Ever since then, his parents wanted him to focus solely on his education. When he was 10 years old, he was enrolled in Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College for a class in trigonometry.

#1 His parents didn’t tell him what his IQ is because they wanted William to grow up as a humble kid.

#2 He had a hard time socializing with other kids his age because according to his mother Catherine, “He didn’t know how to talk to other people because he kept asking ‘Why don’t you know this? This is so easy,’ ”

#3 One of the challenges he had to deal with in SKYCTC was his height. He said he needed to raise his hands really high so that his professor could see him.

#4 His sister, Piper, is also gifted but doesn’t plan on following in her brother’s footsteps.
