Global Bidding of $4 billion Saudi-Bahrain Causeway Project

King Fahad Causeway Authority awards consultancy agreement worth around US$ 9 million

Work on the $4-billion King Hamad Causeway project, which will connect Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, is set to kick off by mid-2021 and will be completed in three years.

Global Tender & Procurement

Companies around the world are invited for the tender & procurement process of the new causeway project which will be launched in two months. And the cost of the causeway project is estimated to range between $3 – $4 billion.


Project Details

The causeway project will also include a rail line for passenger trains and cargo trains as well as a road for vehicle. It will act as a new link between the two GCC countries and will contribute to boosting trade in all fields.

Set to be 25 kilometers long, the new causeway is expected to reduce the traffic on the existing King Fahd Causeway which currently connects the Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Main Consultants

The King Fahad Causeway Authority signed a consultancy agreement worth around US$ 8.9 million with the winning consortium (KPMG, AECOM and CMS), a consortium of financial, technical, and legal companies that will work on developing the financing model, the required engineering specifications, design, as well as the helping with the assement and selection of the main developers. The total project value is estimated at US$ 4 billion.

His Excellency Eng. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, said: “We are pleased to announce the appointment of the main consultancy consortium to start developing all necessary requirements and the financial model required for the construction of the new King Hamad causeway.

PPP Model

The new King Hamad Causeway will be constructed based on a public-private partnership model and will include a parallel rail line. The causeway will be developed and operated following international best practices.
