Solar Power

At a young age, Deepika Kurup already understood the world’s need for clean water that’s why she decided that she had to do something about it. When she was only 14 years old, she invented a solar-powered water heater. It involved using a photocatalytic composite which was made up of titanium oxide and zinc oxide, Portland cement and hollow glass microspheres. With this project, she was able to significantly reduce the amount of total coliform from 8000 colony-forming to 50! It also oxidized Methylene blue faster than that of standard solar disinfecting methods! This project allowed her to win the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist that year.

After 3 years, the clean water advocate wanted to improve her project. She developed a porous photocatalytic composite by using sand, TiO2, silver nitrate and Portland cement. This composite reduced 98% in total coliform bacteria immediately after the filtration. When the filtered water was exposed to sunlight with a photocatalytic composite disc for just 15 minutes, it resulted in 100% inactivation of total coliform bacteria. She garnered another award with this project—the 2014 United States Stockholm Junior Water Prize.

Kurup was also named as one of Forbes 30 Under 30 in Energy.
