You don’t have to pay for getting an engineering mentor. It can be your present boss whenever you have a coffee break or a lunch appointment with him. Take those opportunities to ask questions and listen what he has to say about his experiences.
3. Engineers Must Study the Classics
Some textbook materials are still the most efficient way on how to become an effective leader. It won’t hurt going to the library or bookstore and find classic leadership books that will instill in your mind values of engineering leaders.

With the vast resource of information available on the Internet, you can choose this path instead of the long walk to the library or bookstore. There are several sites that produce newsletters, blogs, and social media that will help you with bits of leadership advices.
5. Engineers, Fill Your Gaps
It’s also about being able to know where you lack in terms of skills and talents. If you have sides of you being an engineer that needs to work on, focus on that first. You will make use of that once you will be in a higher position since you will be all around by then.
