When the wealthiest man in Asia visited the Philippines after accepting an invitation from the student government of De La Salle University, a premier school in Manila. Jack Ma, the founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, delivered an encouraging two-hour talk.
IQ, EQ, LQ
In the discussion, he highlighted the traits of successful people. He said that they possess “IQ, EQ and LQ” or intelligence, emotional and love quotients.
According to Jack Ma, an intelligent person would not succeed if he or she does not know how to deal with other people.
Jack Ma shared about his experience about being ridiculed while starting his internet-based business in China. He was considered a “crazy guy.”
Not minding what other people say about him, he persevered. “Is that a silly dream? Believe (in) something that you are really passionate about. Don’t believe it because other people think it’s important,” Ma said.
He encouraged the students to be simple, stay foolish, and just continue no matter what. People who fail, as Ma believes so, always complain about others.
“Only those people who check their own problems, these people survive, these people succeed,” he said, adding, “If there is no solution, don’t complain.”
Want, Have, Give Up
Miguel Jaime Miranda, a mechanical engineering student, was among those who attended Jack Ma’s talk. In an interview with ABS-CBN, he shared, “There are three points he said, which are: what you want, what you have, and what will you give up.
“So, what you want, that’s your dream [right]? What you have is your resources as of now, and then what you will give up, [of course] in every struggle, in every business or in everything we do, we always have to sacrifice something.
“It’s either time, or effort or sleep, in that case, even in school, so these are the three things that I always think about. Well, I will start thinking about as I go through college and working and business, in everything,” he said.
Miranda and the rest of Ma’s audience cannot simply ignore these life lessons – Jack Ma is a dignified inspirational speaker. Prior to having a net worth of $40.1 billion in 2018 (Forbes), the 53-year-old went through lots of rejections in his education and career which are his source of strength and motivation.
