Qatar has revealed their plans to construct a 40,000 seat modular arena for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The arena is designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects. This massive circular structure, like all other arenas, will include seats, bathroom, concession stands and shops. What makes this arena special is that all of the previously mentioned will be housed in shipping containers which fit within a steel frame.

The arena design will be modular which means that the whole area can be quickly disassembled and reassembled at a new site after the event. Which could mean that it could have new configurations, or maintain the same layout. It is also a greener and more efficient construction process than conventional stadiums.

The components are to be shipped to a nearby port and will then be assembled on site at the Doha waterfront over a period of three years. The modular structure will be needing a few additional materials and will generate relatively little waste as it is being built. The creators believe that this could earn a four star Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certification.

H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy for the World Cup, said “This venue offers the perfect legacy, capable of being reassembled in a new location in its entirety or built into numerous small sports and cultural venues. All of this in a stadium that delivers the atmosphere fans expect at a World Cup and which we will build in a more sustainable way than ever before.I’m delighted with this design and confident that Ras Abu Aboud will become a blueprint for future mega-event planners to follow.
