PV Solar Cell
Researchers from the University of Illinois have developed a solar cell that can convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into usable hydrocarbon fuel by using only sunlight for energy.
Conventional solar cells convert sunlight into electricity which need to be stored in heavy batteries, but this new device acts just like plants, they convert the atmospheric carbon dioxide into fuel! Imagine a solar farm with these devices that could remove significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere, and produce fuel at the same time! It’s solving two environmental problems at once.

According to Amin Salehi-Khojin, the assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at UIC and senior author of the study, “The new solar cell is not photovoltaic—it’s photosynthetic. Instead of producing energy in an unsustainable one-way route from fossil fuels to greenhouse gas, we can now reverse the process and recycle atmospheric carbon into fuel using sunlight.”
They have already filed a provisional patent application. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.
