Why I’m Choosing My Engineering Career Over Love and Marriage

This is not a bitter love story about how I got hurt by a former love.

Engineering Career Over Love

I’m in my twenties and I have always been comfortable with the freedom I’m getting from being single.

But people often ask me, “When do you plan on getting married?” On my social media accounts, I have former classmates who are getting married and starting their own families already.

While I am very happy for them, I am in no hurry to rush into love and marriage. For now, I will choose my engineering career over love and marriage.

This is not a bitter love story about how I got hurt by a former love.

This is not even a black propaganda against marriage.

I will always believe in love and I see myself getting married in the future.

But that future seems to be distant for now and I just choose my engineering career over love.

We all have different priorities. Some of us may want to spend the rest of our lives finding love, getting married and raising a family.

But there are women and men out there, who choose to build a career out of the things they learned from engineering school.

There are engineers out there who focus on making a career building things, developing ideas and creating innovative products for the good of mankind.

Just like me, they also choose their careers as engineers.

While I’m sure that there’s an indescribable happiness in loving someone, in raising a child and in going home to a place full of love, I would like to focus more on finding pleasure in the achievements I earn from my hard work.

I would like to prioritize on the investments I’d like to pay attention to. When I get older, I would like to look back and beam with pride knowing that before I became a part of a “we”, I was able to achieve something on my own.

By choosing my career, I choose my freedom to learn more, to explore further and to expand my horizons.

Before I give my heart to someone, I would like to give my heart to my career that would help me save for a future I could be proud of. This will be a future when I’m confident to raise my kids with no financial problems.

This will be a future when I know I can be committed to someone without compromising the hard work I’d like to put in my engineering career.

This will be a future where I won’t regret studying years in engineering school without putting it to waste.

If you feel the same way that I do, I encourage you to go after what you want. If you choose to focus on your career, don’t feel ashamed of it.

If you choose to be an engineer who wants to be on top one day, I urge you to go for it.

Ignore the comments. You don’t have to give in to the pressures of society.

However, some of you may argue against my views. I get that we don’t have the same priorities in life.

But I am an engineer who is in love with my craft, with my career and the life I’ve built around it. Maybe, if i’m lucky enough, I’ll meet someone who understands where I’m coming from and respects my commitment to my career.

Maybe my priorities will change by then. Who knows? Only time can tell. But until then, I’ll choose my engineering career over love and marriage.
