An Open Letter To The Future Chemical Engineers

If we happen to meet on the road, I would smile and thank you for being able to live my dream.

I am writing to the future Chemical Engineers out there. I was once like you. I had the same dream of getting the degree with the highest honors. I wanted to be a chemical engineer just like you. I really wanted to and although life took me to a different path, I still often wonder what would my life have been if I never gave up on my chemical engineering dream. Maybe a part of me will always regret on letting go of a dream that everybody knows is hard to achieve.

So, I am writing you this letter to let you know that I am rooting for you. Both you and I know how difficult the path is to earn that degree. Both you and I know that there will always be terror professors every step of the way and that subjects get harder as you progress. But between you and I, only you will be able to know what it feels like to get that diploma, smile to your loved ones, celebrate with your batch mates and finally shout to the whole world that you’re a chemical engineering graduate.

My friend, it never gets easy. I gave up on my dream to be a chemical engineer just because I doubted myself. For every failing marks I got after every exam, the more discouraged I became to pursue this course. Until one day, I just woke up and shifted to a different course. Please don’t be like me. Don’t lose sight of hope whenever you hear your professors sigh at the sight of your grades. Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t be like me.

This is me reminding you that all of the pain and tears will be worth it. Study hard and study smart. Surround yourself with good friends who will cheer you up after every difficult exam. Have faith in yourself that you will be able to get that degree you’ve worked so hard for. Just don’t ever give up on it. Be the chemical engineer I’ve always wanted to be.

One day, you’ll just wake up knowing that all the sacrifices you’ve made to be a chemical engineer were worth it. You’ll look back and beam with pride knowing that you never gave up on your chemical engineering dream. And if we happen to meet on the road, I would smile and thank you for being able to live my dream. So, go ahead. Be the chemical engineer we both wanted to be.

To the future Chemical Engineers, move forward.
