CNC Machining vs. Handcrafted: Why Bother with the Old School?

CNC machining provides a much higher chance for your business to thrive and be competitive in this sometimes cruel market.

In today’s world of advanced technology and automation, CNC machining has revolutionized the manufacturing industry by providing precise and efficient production processes. However, there is still a strong appeal and value in handcrafted products that cannot be replicated by machines. While CNC machining offers speed and accuracy, handcrafted products often possess a unique charm and that special something that can only be achieved through the skill and creativity of the crafter. This is why many people believe that these two simply cannot compare as they are different in so many ways, but is that an actual fact? The best way to find out is by checking which method is better, so let’s start.

Precision and Accuracy

One of the biggest advantages of CNC machining is its ability to produce incredibly precise and accurate components. With CNC machining guiding every step of the manufacturing process, the margin for error is significantly reduced. This level of precision is especially crucial in industries like aerospace and medicine, where even the smallest mistake can have serious consequences. With precise instructions, we can use these machines to create even the most complicated components without any mistakes or deviations. On the other hand, human error is inevitable in handcrafted work, leading to variations in measurements and quality, and even the best craftsmen can make a mistake, which is not something we can say for CNC machines. Also, operating these machines is a delicate thing and something that folks cannot do without proper training.

Efficiency and Productivity

Everything today is about being as productive as possible because this is where the profits are. There are so many things business owners tend to do to increase the overall efficiency of their employees and the overall productivity of the company. With this said, it’s nothing strange that CNC machining is more efficient and productive than handcrafted techniques.  Keep in mind that various things can affect the performance of the employee, while on the other hand, machines are not affected by those things.

Also, while people may be able to produce a limited number of pieces in a given time frame, CNC machines can manufacture hundreds or even thousands of identical components with ease. These machines operate without having to take a break or time out. There are no specific working hours, and this is exactly why mechanization increases the overall productivity of some companies, and the same goes for CNC machining. We cannot say that machines can replace people, but we can surely say that they can work longer and produce more.

Better Consistency

Yes, we have already mentioned that these machines don’t ever need a break, and even though they need to be maintained in the proper way, they still perform in the same way before and after maintenance. This is not something we can say about people and handcrafted products. Creating something from scratch with your hands is difficult even for those with the most skill, but imagine having to repeat the same thing and process in order to create the same product hundreds of times. Yes, it’s simply impossible.

With CNC machining, things are much different, and once a program is set up for a specific part, the machine can reproduce that part identically hundreds or thousands of times without even the slightest deviation. This is also something that’s good for the company because producing parts of the same high quality means that the trust of those who want to buy them from that company will get much higher as they will know that all the components will be the same. This leads to more clients, which leads to more orders, which leads to more work, which leads to more profits.

Cost-Effectiveness

Everything today revolves around money, and in the business world, profits are everything. The goal of running a successful business is to reduce expenses and increase profits. Now, there are so many ways to do this, but automatization and using various machines have proven to be the best in certain industries. Yes, there is something special about handcrafted things and parts, but that effort and time placed into producing something represents things that you cannot place a price tag on. Just this fact, besides increased efficiency and productivity, better accuracy, and consistency, speaks volumes about why CNC machining is a much preferable choice.

Yes, you will have to pay a hefty sum to buy these machines, but this initial investment is nothing compared to how much these machines will increase the overall profits of the company. Just looking at the facts gives you an insight into how cost-effective CNC machining equipment really is in the long run. Once again, handcraft or the so-called ‘Old School’ also has certain benefits, and something machines will never have is creativity, but from the perspective of a business owner, CNC machining simply provides a much higher chance for your business to thrive and be competitive in this sometimes cruel market.
