To The Struggling Engineers: All Izz Well

The problem with us engineers is that nobody understands our problems but ourselves.

Yes, the struggle is real, but that doesn’t mean that you have to give in to it. The problem with us engineers is that nobody understands our problems but ourselves. People often compare themselves to us, saying that we’re taking it too hard, or that we need to relax more. Well, let me tell you this, engineering is not something to relax about, and it never will be.

To the struggling engineers out there, however, I’m telling you that it’s not so bad. You may think of giving up or changing careers after hitting a wall. But stick with it, if you really love engineering that is. If you’re saying that everything is doomed or nothing else is working anymore, take a deep breath, “all izz well.”

The first time I heard “All Izz Well” was when I first watched the movie the 3 Idiots. And back then, I didn’t think it was that relevant. How can saying 3 words change your status in work? Or even in engineering school? So I dismissed it and just went on with my life. I was still in school then, and at that time, I thought the only way to get through engineering was to crawl your way out.

Taking up engineering was an easy choice, but all of us can say that finishing it is not an easy task. You get hit hard by things other people can’t understand. The stress of finding a solution to a problem that you might not even encounter in real life burdens you. “Why the hell am I doing this?”, that was what I always said as I wake up every morning before going to school. That was when it hit me. I was repeating negativity over and over, and it slowly sucked the life out of me.

It wasn’t till a few months till I saw the movie again, I didn’t mean to rewatch it, but I wanted something to take my mind away from the struggles. I watched the crazy antics of the trio as they “survived” engineering school, and how the three words “All Izz Well” helped them through it. It was then when I realized what those words really meant. It wasn’t just a random “motto” that calmed people down, it was a mantra that helped them convince themselves that, well, “all izz well”. If you’re not familiar with mantras, it’s usually a phrase that’s repeated over and over to generate positive energy. The words themselves didn’t change their lives, it was the positivity that it brought that did.

Positivity is what you need to get on, even when nothing else seems to be falling into place. I don’t regret going into engineering, as a matter of fact, I’m happy that I did. Even if I was bombarded with stress during the years that I’ve spent in school, I can say that it was still years well spent. “All Izz Well” helped me get past my struggles, not just in engineering but in life as well.
