The Most Important Thing to Know About NYC SST Training Deadlines

By September 1, 2020, the workers at construction sites must complete 40 hours of training

The last days of November 2019 caused an enormous stir among the supervisors at job sites who planned to receive SST training to get an SST card. Many did not succeed in doing it because Site Safety training companies could not manage the number of queries from those interested in getting the necessary certificate. Therefore, many supervisors did not have the time or opportunity to receive 62 62-hour training courses and did not get a Supervisor SST Card.  According to Local Law 196, the supervisors at construction sites have to pay penalties as high as $5,000 if they do not satisfy all New York City Department of Buildings requirements.

In this context, it should be recalled that construction site workers must complete 40 hours of training by September 1, 2020.

Two ways exist to fulfill the 40-hour training requirement by September 1, 2020. The first option comprises 30 hours of OSHA, 8 hours of Fall Prevention, and 2 hours of Drug and Alcohol Awareness training courses. The OSHA 30-hour course deals with the questions covering occupational health and safety, provides instruction on OSHA regulations and requirements, and helps the supervisors and the workers to recognize and reduce the risks at construction sites. The 8-hour Fall Prevention course will teach workers to avoid accidents and injuries at job sites. 2-hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness training educates the workers on hazards that can be caused by the abuse of drugs and alcohol at construction sites.

The second option comprises the following courses: 10 hours of OSHA, 8 hours of Fall Prevention, 2 hours of Drug and Alcohol Awareness, 8 hours of Site Safety Manager Refresher, 4 hours of Supported Scaffold, and 4 hours of General and 4 hours of Special Electives. During the 8-hour Site Safety Manager Refresher training course, the workers will know about the possible hazards of working in the New York City construction environment. The 4-hour Supported Scaffold training course will give the workers basic information about supported scaffold safety.

There is an opportunity to purchase a 10 Hour SST Worker Package instead of 8 hours of Prevention of the fall and 2 hours of awareness about drugs and alcohol and save 15%. This training package is DOB-approved and includes both courses (in-person and online). You only need to choose the date and location for the in-person course. You can also start an online course right away on our website.
