HVAC Engineers Vaccination

With the first COVID-19 vaccine recipients already named for the initial stages of deployment, many industry organizations are lobbying to get specific workers in skilled trades (including HVAC technicians) on the list for the next vaccine distribution. Leaders of organizations believe that technicians are just as essential in the fight against COVID-19. After all, they are responsible for keeping homes safe and warm now that the winter season has begun.

They hop from building to the next as they maintain, service, repair, and replace necessary equipment to have our HVAC systems up and running for the oncoming cold months. In the process, it is not unlikely for them to inadvertently spread the virus, especially when they come into contact with the residents of said buildings. While the workers do adhere to the guidelines set by CDC when it comes to PPEs, there is always a risk of exposure that cannot be overlooked, particularly in smaller residential units.

HVACR technicians are also in demand now that the vaccine distribution is underway. These vials, which have to be handled and stored at specific temperatures, require functional equipment and in turn, technicians who will see to it that these storage and handling units are in top shape.

Given these demands, it is but necessary that HVAC workers, along with heating fuel delivery drivers and plumbing and utility service professionals, are vaccinated as soon as possible. By having them vaccinated, they will be protected from health threats while working in facilities for COVID-19 patients, all while preventing the spread of the virus.

To make this possible, a handful of industry leaders are increasing their advocacy efforts to have these professionals prioritized for Phase 1B of the vaccine distribution. They will be working hand in hand with state and local units, who will ultimately have the final say in the distribution plan.
