HVAC Filters to Mitigate the Spread of Covid-19 Delta Variant

When utilized appropriately, air cleaners and HVAC filters can assist in the reduction of airborne pollutants such as viruses within a building or small area

HVAC Filters to Mitigate the Spread of Covid-19 Delta Variant

It has been studied that indoors, airborne transmission of the COVID-19 Delta Variant Virus is possible, particularly for those who spend lengthy amounts of time in crowded, poorly ventilated rooms.

Given the risk of viral transmission via the air, building managers, safety experts, and others may take efforts to improve ventilation and airflow indoors, therefore limiting viral spread. Now may be an excellent moment to consider ways to improve interior air quality in buildings, whether by substantial improvements to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems or through physical alterations to control internal airflows.

Numerous technologies are available to cleanse the air. Filtration is the most often used and, in most cases, the most effective way for HVAC systems. Air cleaners and HVAC filters are meant to filter pollutants or toxins out of the air that flows via them.

At home, air cleaning and filtration can assist in reducing airborne pollutants, such as virus-containing particles. Portable air cleaners can be especially beneficial when further ventilation with external air is not available without jeopardizing room comfort (temperature or humidity) or when outdoor air pollution is excessive. However, using air purifiers alone will not provide acceptable indoor air quality, particularly in areas with considerable pollution sources and poor ventilation.

Meanwhile, for commercial HVAC systems in buildings, filters are often placed at an air intake or outlet or within the central air-handling unit. Due to the possibility of contaminated outdoor air flowing into an HVAC system, particularly in urban locations with densely packed buildings, technicians may install a pre-filter for incoming air.

Also consider employing portable air cleaners to improve HVAC system ventilation and filtration, especially in places where appropriate ventilation is difficult to accomplish. Directing the airflow so that it does not blow straight from one individual to another limits the potential transmission of droplets that may carry contagious viruses.

Certain items marketed as air purifiers purposefully create ozone. These items should not be used in the presence of humans since ozone might irritate the airways. Ozone applied to indoor air does not efficiently eliminate viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological contaminants when utilized at quantities that do not violate public health guidelines.
