This Isolated Cantilevered Cabin Provides Home for Passing Mountaineers

It sits at the edge of an abyss somewhere at the Kanin Mountains bordering Slovenia and Italy.

For people with an irrational fear of heights, a house at the edge of an abyss is not the most ideal abode. Aracnophobics will never find themselves in a settlement with a risky position.

But if it has a rather exceptional view that shows the beautiful sunrise or the brightest stars at night, some others might just consider.

The sleek space that is situated along the Slovenian-Italian border features a 360-degree view that offers panoramas of both countries.

A minimalist house, it was designed by OFIS Arhitekti to have a series of resting platforms inside with a few rustic décor. It forms a compact wooden volume with three floor resting platforms.

Half of the base is stabilized over a rock, while the other half, where the resting part of the cabin is located, cantilevers over the cliff.  The CBD structural engineers have made this happen.

It is a humble and fragile on the outside, but the vertical residence is built with the resilience to withstand extreme conditions being at a high altitude and exposed with different weathers.

The cabin is vulnerable to strong rainstorms and winds, earthquakes, and landslides – something that its inhabitants should be wary about especially at night.

Its location also has some history into it. That area of the Kanin Mountains had some battles from the World War I held there.

Helicopters taken care of by the Slovene Armed Forces were used to carefully construct this on top of the rocky mountain. There were three attempts before the prefab structure stood erect and fastened to the surrounding stone, after bad weather and unexpected turbulences were experienced.

According to its designers, the house is erected to study the structure under unexpected weather conditions.

They tell in a press release, “The challenge is to install real objects remote sites … and study their response to extreme weather, radical temperature shifts, snow and rugged terrain.

“The harsh conditions of wind, snow, landslides, terrain, and weather require a response of specific architectural forms, structures and concept.”

As pointed out by its creators, the space is intended to become a destination for hikers, climbers, cavers, mountaineers, nature lovers and romantics. A maximum of 9 people can fit in this modest house.
