Tiger Tests Positive

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in people, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

The big cat is thought to be the first tiger infected with the virus, according to the USDA.

The cats are believed to have been infected by a zoo keeper.

Nadia, her sister Azul, as well as two Amur tigers and three African lions, had developed a dry cough and all are expected to fully recover, it says.”We tested the cat out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about COVID-19 will contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus,” the zoo said in a statement.

Nadia underwent X-rays, an ultrasound and blood tests to try to figure out what was ailing her. You just simply can not disinfect a tiger by a hand sanitizer. So how do you treat an animal?

They decided to test for COVID-19 given the surge in cases in New York City, the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States.

“Appropriate preventive measures are now in place for all staff who are caring for them, and the other cats in our four WCS zoos, to prevent further exposure of any other of our zoo cats,” the Wildlife Conservation Society, the parent company of the Bronx Zoo, said in a statement.

According to the press release, the tiger was infected by a person who was taking care of the animals who was either asymptomatically infected with the coronavirus or had not yet developed symptoms.

“to prevent further exposure of any other of our zoo cats.”Zoo officials said they hope Nadia’s diagnosis “will ensure any knowledge we gain about COVID-19 will contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus. ”It is unknown how COVID-19 develops in big cats.

There is also no evidence that animals can infect people with the virus. The Bronx Zoo has been temporarily closed since March 16.

Now the zoo is saying they’re taking “appropriate preventive measures” for all staff members who are caring for the tigers and the other cats
